Biomass CHP

Aughrim Energy is a 1 MWel biomass CHP project based in Aughrim, Co Wicklow, Ireland. The project consists of a gasification furnace coupled to high pressure steam boilers. The combustion plant is commissioned and tested. It is now waiting for the steam turbine to complete the last phase. Upon activation it will generate 1 MW of electricity for export to the grid and provide heat to the site for process use.

Insulated and refractory lined gasification step grate furnace suitable for connection to independent freestanding smoke tube and/or water tube boilers. Demonstration unit currently installed at Woodfab Timber, Co Wicklow, Ireland (Wood Chip 50-60% mo) & Sicomo, Beeka Lebanon (MSW & Paper Pulp 40-55% mo)

Up to 25m3/hr fuel throughput or up to 20 MW combustion energy

• The furnace can be designed for moisture contents from 14% to 60%

• Combustion chamber out-let temperatures of 1025 deg C achieved with 52% moisture fuels.

• Fully automated control system. Enabling unmanned operation.

• Automated alarm system for SMS text message alert to operator on call.

• Remote log on for monitoring and control.

• Recirculated flue gas for fine control of boiler temperature.

• Independent flue gas oxygen level control to maximise efficiency

• Non X-Ray, multipoint, non-contact grate level sensing enabling automatic adjustment for varied fuel types and moisture content.

• Pre-drying zone for high moisture content fuels.

• Gasification zone with independent primary air and recirc’ flue gas for precise combustion gas temperature adjustment.

• Fuel storage and infeed system capable of handling random unscreened fuels including occasional oversize pieces up to 50 x 50 x 500 lng off cuts and fir brash up to 1200 lng.

• Water quench ash removal.

• Fully automated fuel hopper fire protection control with redundancy for plant power failure.

• 4 to 1 turn down achieved in tests for more economical standby operation
